What is Mineral Makeup?

Would it be ok if I just said ‘your new best friend’ and left it at that? Nah, you probably won’t let me get off that easy, right? Yup, that’s what I thought.  Mineral makeup is essentially compressed minerals such as mica, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that are finely ground up to become make-up.  The most popular mineral makeup is foundation, however there are also now many primer, blush, bronzer and eyeshadow options as well.  And a recent growing trend – liquid mineral foundation! When in powder form, mineral makeup is generally applied to the face with a brush using a buffing technique.  You are essentially buffing the minerals in to your skin.  Some of the minerals have anti-inflammatory properties (a.k.a. pimple fighters) and most are made from pure minerals however some are synthetically made.  It’s important to do your research so you know if what you’re getting is pure or synthetic.  Unfortunately labeling in the makeup industry is not always as straight forward as one would hope.  Even then, there are no regulations regarding what ‘pure’ is – hence the importance of research!

Generally speaking, mineral makeup comes in a powder form however there is a new emerging trend – compact or pressed mineral makeup as mentioned above – liquid mineral foundation.  Mineral makeup is generally free from parabens, preservatives, fragrances and synthetic dyes which make it to the go-to makeup for those with sensitive skin.  Mineral makeup not only has sunscreen properties within it (if they contain zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide), but also can act as a light refractor, essentially making your skin look like it is glowing from within while minimizing any flaws.  It is important to note though that this does not make it a substitute for SPF protection from the sun.  Mineral makeup is believed to be beneficial for skin types that are susceptible to clogged pores since minerals generally are not absorbed by the skin.  This also helps deter away from bacteria having a hay day on your face.  As you can imagine this becomes very helpful for those that are fighting acne.

Users of mineral makeup are generally attracted to it for its health benefits however end up falling in love with its appearance on the skin.  Users, like me, tout the makeup’s ability to provide flawless coverage and a natural look.  Of course with any makeup product, there are pros and cons.  Learn more about the pros and cons of mineral makeup.

Quick note – if you currently have or had sensitive skin, troubling acne or any other skin condition, or on a medication, it is always best to check with your doctor/dermatologist first to see if mineral makeup is the best choice for your skin.  You may just see this as makeup but remember that each person’s skin responds differently to makeup and you want to be thoughtful about anything that is new or different being applied to your face.
